Useful information if you’re moving to Germany
The Federal Republic of Germany, known simply as Germany, was one of the founder members of the European Union and of all the EU countries it has the largest population, with 82 million people living there.
German manufacturing has a great reputation and it is one of the world’s leading exporters and has the third largest economy. Some of Germany’s best known exports include AEG, Miele and Blanco, who manufacture kitchen appliances; car brands such as BMW, Porsche and Mercedes Benz; and the famous skin care product Nivea.
Germany has 16 states and the capital is Berlin, which is also the largest city in the country. Berlin is a vibrant city with a long history and several renowned museums. It’s also a centre of entertainment, with many restaurants, clubs and bars.
While the stereotypical image of Germany brings to mind lederhosen, sauerkraut and sausages, Germany is famous for many things. The landscape changes dramatically as you travel from state to state, and visitors are drawn to Germany to discover the varied cultures and cuisines the country offers. Many fine wines are produced in Germany, and there are festivals and celebrations throughout the year that attract tourists. The architecture is also inspiring, and there are many historical buildings and other sites to be seen. Proof of Germany’s credentials as a holiday destination lie in the fact that though Germans are avid fans of foreign travel, many still prefer to spend vacations in their home country, between the Alps in the south and the North Sea.
Removals to Berlin
Berlin has perhaps seen more changes over the last century than any other city in Europe. At one time divided by the Berlin Wall, the city was united in 1990 with the fall of the Wall, and is now undergoing a period of rejuvenation to restore glory to this formerly war torn city. A huge building programme has resulted in some ultra-modern architecture that contrasts strikingly with the older buildings, and the city is now prosperous and a great destination for business and tourism.
Removals to Hamburg
Hamburg famous for its excellent shopping. As well as the usual international brands you’ll find more unusual designers and local retailers lining the streets. While you’re shopping, take time to visit the lake at Alster. It was original a river that powered water mills, but continued damming led to the formation of a large lake that you can walk around. Some of the grandest houses in all of Germany are located round the lake, so it’s well worth a visit.
Removals to Munich
Anyone who knows their beer will have heard of the famous month-long Oktoberfest beer festival that takes place in Munich but this city is far more cultured than the beer would suggest. Some of the best museums, art galleries and theatres in Germany are located in Munich. It’s also a Mecca for music fans – it has its own orchestras and musical ensembles and fans flock to the concert halls and opera house to hear local and international performers.
Removals to Frankfurt
Frankfurt is known as the financial hub of Germany as it is home to the Bundesbank and the German Stock Exchange. Built on the River Main, Frankfurt is the largest city in the Hesse district and it is a popular tourist destination. Many world trade fairs visit the city, including the massive Frankfurt Book Fair, which has around a quarter of a million visitors every year.
Removals to Essen
Located in the Ruhr region, Essen was at one time the most important mining area in Europe. However, despite the decline of the mining industry, which has affected so many cities around the world, Essen has continued to be a vibrant and surprisingly attractive destination. Perhaps its biggest attraction is the number of green spaces waiting to be explored, especially the beautiful Grugapark and Baldeneysee Lake areas.
Removals to Dortmund
Dortmund is well known for its football – there are around 140 clubs in the city – and in fact sport generally is hugely popular here. Dortmund is a very modern city and its history can be seen at its main museum, the Museum am Ostwall. Dortmund’s industrial roots lie in mining, steel production and brewing, but it’s now more likely to be the home to industries like media, communications and IT.
